To realize what war is one should follow our tracks. - William T. Sherman

Located in Cobb County, Georgia, just under 25 miles from Atlanta, Kennesaw was the one last mountain between Sherman and the Confederate-held city during the American Civil War. The Union had already marched 70 miles when the Gibraltar of Georgia towered before them at 1,800 feet high. Equally formidable was the seven-mile-long Confederate defense line that greeted them upon arrival.

This full-colored poster depicts June 27, 1864, when the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain began. The Union conducted a large frontal assault on Confederate troops stationed at Little Kennesaw Mountain, Pigeon Hill, and Cheatham Hill, the later where Dead Angle forced the forces into a horrific standoff. After a two-day stalemate at Dead Angle, the Confederacy and Union agreed to a two-hour truce.

It was during these truces that the Union and Confederacy saw past the war, and together buried the dead where they lay—together as Americans.
