The African Burial Ground is dedicated to Africans of early New York and Americans of African descent. Until 1794, free and enslaved Africans were buried in a 6.6 acre burial ground outside the boundaries of New Amsterdam, later known as New York.
Lost to history, the grounds were rediscovered in 1991 and designated as a National Monument in 2006. Our collectible African Burial Ground collectible pin features the Monument and the sacred grounds where approximately 15,000 free and enslaved Africans were buried in this 17th century burial ground.
