Established as a national monument in 1933 and awarded national park status on October 31, 1994 as part of the Desert Protection Act signed by President Bill Clinton, Death Valley National Park is 3 million acres of dazzling sand dunes, deep water-carved canyons exposing multicolored rock layers, and rugged snow-capped mountains. Home to the lowest point in North America, the Badwater Basin, holds the record for hottest documented temperature on earth, 134 degrees was witnessed on July 10, 1913. The park is the largest in the contiguous 48 states.
