Arlington National Cemetery was created in 1864. The land, which belonged to Mrs. Robert E. Lee, was confiscated during the Civil War. In May, 1864, the first military burials took place. By the end of the Civil War, thousands of Union soldiers had been buried at Arlington.
Today, the cemetery contains over 400,000 graves, including service personnel from all branches of the military, two presidents, civilians, children, and former slaves.
The Arlington Cemetery Ornament has a wreath around the seal of the United States War Office.
