Established in 1906 as one of America's first national monuments, President Theodore Roosevelt set aside the Petrified Forest to preserve and protect the petrified wood for scientific value.
It is recognized today for having so much more, including a broad representation of the Late Triassic paleo-ecosystem, significant human history, clear night skies, a fragile grasslands ecosystem and unspoiled scenic vistas. The park was elevated to National Park status by President John F. Kennedy in 1964 and was increased in size to 218,533 acres in 2004.
