Activated in 1943, the 99th Fighter Squadron was the first Tuskegee unit to be activated. Led by Col. Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., the group was deployed to French Morocco and Tunisia before eventually meeting up with the 332nd Fighter Group in Italy.
