Originally envisioned and created by private citizens that wanted a way for their fellow Americans to enjoy this beautiful section of the country, the trail was completed in 1937. Today, it is managed by the National Park Service, the United States Forest Service, and the Non-profit Appalachian Trail Conservancy.
