In the Summer of 1864, the Confederate army was advancing through northern Maryland, on their way to Washington D.C. In the Battle of Monocacy, vastly outnumbered Union forces managed to delay the Confederates long enough for reinforcements to arrive at the capital. Though they lost the battle that day, they may have saved the Union.
Remember ''The Battle That Saved Washington'' with a collectible hiking medallion from Monocacy National Battlefield. The design shows Union troops burning a bridge on the path to the capital. Affix it to your favorite hiking stick before your next walk through history!
