Appomattox Court House is the famous site of the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee to the Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant ending the American Civil War. Despite years of bloodshed and fighting, the surrender was handled cordially between the two powerhouse generals. When Lee and Grant met, they spoke for about twenty-five minutes about other things before getting around to the actual surrender. During the discussion, General Lee also asked for provisions as the Confederate army had gone several days without rations, and later the Union forces sent over 25,000 rations to the hungry Confederates. Such was the generosity of General Grant and the character of General Lee, that the surrender was later called "The Gentlemen’s Agreement." This decal illustrates the two men shaking hands as they come to the terms of surrender. Place it on your car or any other item to mark this turning point in American history.
