Ulysses S. Grant our 18th President graduated from West Point in 1843. At the beginning of the Civil War he was commissioned as a colonel with Illinois Volunteers. His company went to Missouri where Abraham Lincoln promoted him to brigadier general. Later Grant took Forts Donelson and Henry. After a battle at Shiloh, he was victorious at Vicksburg and Chattanooga. In 1863 he became commander of all Union Armies. On Aril 9, 1865 the Southern Army surrendered at Appomattox.
Grant served as President from 1869 to 1877. He moved to New York where he died in 1885 and was laid to rest in Grant's tomb, the largest mausoleum in North America.
