Before the end of the Civil War slavery existed in America's South. The Underground Railroad was neither underground nor a railroad. It was a series of hiding places (or stations) used by anti-slavery people who helped slaves escape. Runaway slaves were given food, a place to rest and were directed to the next station until they reached freedom.
