In colonial times, young boys that were too young to join the army were still able to travel with the militia as fife or drummer boys. These boys would determine the cadence, the speed at which the army marched forward. Even when they were just at camp, the boys would blow the horns that alerted the soldiers to wake up or that meals were ready. Our ornament features a young drummer to symbolize the work that even the youngest men were able to put in to protect our country.
