Depicted on our ornament is Eleanor Dare holding her newborn girl, Virginia Dare. Virginia Dare was born to Eleanor and her husband Ananias on August 18, 1587, and she was the first English child born in the New World. Roanoke Colony was England’s first attempt at colonizing the New World. Unfortunately, Virginia and her family were part of the 117 people who mysteriously disappeared from Roanoke. Although nobody knows what happens to those colonists, Virginia is seen as a symbol of the beginning of America’s colonization. Hang our ornament up over the holidays to honor the Lost Colony and the beginning of our country.
