Part of the National Park Civil War Series. The Battle of Chickamauga saw the Federal Army of the Cumberland led by Major General William Rosencrans, and the Confederate Army of Tennessee led by General Braxton Bragg, square off in a region of formidable rivers and mountain ranges that would hinder offensive movements. Both armies found logistics difficult and both depended on railroads for their lifeblood. Retention of the region was a matter of great importance to the Confederacy since the resources found there were vital to its war-making potential. The Union's goal was to wrest these resources from Richmond's grasp.
