The Great Seal of the Confederacy depicts the statue of George Washington riding a horse that stands in Richmond, Virginia—the capital of the CFA. On the seal, Washington is surrounded by southern agricultural products like wheat, corn, and of course, cotton. On the very outer part of the seal is the date February 22, 1862, the date of the Confederacy's federation and Washington's birthday. The words DEO VINDICE, or God Will Vindicate, also appear on the seal.

Interestingly enough, because of the Federal naval blockade, the seal barely made it to Richmond. By the time it did so, it was too late in the war to be widely used, though the seal did appear on bank notes and some documents.
