Although hundreds of thousands of people passed through the Cumberland Gap to settle in the West, there were some who were content to plant their roots right there in the region. Sherman Hensley, his family and others who joined them were just such people. Pioneers in their own way, they created a settlement community on Brush Mountain near the Cumberland Gap, working hard to make a living off the land without modern conveniences such as electricity.
Featured on this magnet is a photo of the Lige Gibbons cabin, one of the many residences made by inhabitants of the Hensley Settlement. Like the Lige Gibbons cabin, the settlement buildings remain to this day and can be seen on guided tours at the park.
