During the American Civil War, Richmond was the capital of the Confederate States of America. Richmond is the site of many battles fought to take or defend the city during the war. It was also home to historically significant buildings such as the Tredegar Iron Works, the primary arms manufacturing site for the rebellion, or the Chimbroazo Hospital, which treated over 76,000 Confederate soldiers.
