The Bald Eagle was officially declared the National Emblem of the United States in 1782 because it is a species unique to North America. Bald Eagles are monogamous and mate for life. They build large nests called aeries, at the tops of sturdy tall trees. The female lays 1-3 eggs annually.
Bald Eagles do not produce the distinctive white head and tail feathers until they are about 4-5 years old. Eagles have been nesting and raising their young in Fort Donelson since 2004.
