Ellis Island Great Hall Window Earrings

Item#: 337102

During it's time of operation Ellis Island was the final destination for over 12 million immigrants before they entered America. Since it ceased being an immigrant inspection station in 1954, Ellis Island has occupied a place in the American cultural consciousness as nearly synonymous with immigration or as a crucial part of the immigrant experience.

These beautiful earrings symbolize the journey those millions of people undertook to start a new life in America. Made to resemble the windows in the Great Hall of the immigration station— where immigrants received their first glimpse of the New York skyline— these earrings wonderfully honor the immigrant experience.

I bought these earrings as a gift for my daughter-in-love and am tempted to buy them again for myself. I appreciate 'message' accessories, and because so many of our family members came to the US through Ellis Island the image was meaningful to me, but I wasn't prepared for the sheer beauty of the earrings. One caution: In these days of face masks, don't be tempted to go without the little rubber stoppers on the hooks. I've already lost one of the wrought iron earrings I bought for myself!
