Harry Truman loved to walk and his cane is as much a symbol of him as Lincoln's top hat.  Always in the vanguard of fashion, Truman used a cane long before he really needed one.  Clipping along at 120 paces a minute, cane swinging, the president was a familiar sight in both Independence and Washington.

Although he had no set route, his walks averaged 1 1/2 miles and lasted 1/2 hour.  Truman took his health seriously.  He wrote, ''If you are going to take a walk for your physical benefit, it is necessary that you walk as if you are going someplace.  You swing your arms and take deep breathes as you walk.''
