Home to some of the finest coal available, New River Gorge supplied this ''black gold'' to American industries, creating a thriving economy in the area. Consequently, more than 120 communities had sprung up in the region by the 1920s. This boom continued for more than 80 years, with resources flowing out of the area perhaps as fast and as powerfully as the New River flowed through the Gorge. Sadly, the resources eventually declined, and with them went the industrial heartbeat of the region.

Ironically, this decline is partly what gives the area its draw: Empty towns and ruins of buildings still dot the landscape, continually beckoning visitors to explore this 53-mile stretch of riverway that became a unit of the National Park Service in 1978. This oval, embroidered patch is a fitting tribute to a park that is rich with history, culture and nature.
