Carlsbad Caverns National Park Pin

Beneath the canyons, cactus, grass and thorny shrubs of the Chihuahuan Desert are more than 118 known caves formed when sulfuric acid dissolved the surrounding limestone. Seventeen species of bat have been identified within Carlsbad Cavern National Park, including the Mexican free tailed bats, which can be seen emerging from the caves in droves at sunset to feast on bugs from Memorial Day to mid-October.
