Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa covers 2,526 acres in the upper Mississippi River region. The monument preserves 191 Late Woodland Period Indian mounds, including 31 bird and bear effigies. As the largest-known concentration of mounds remaining in the United States, there is much for visitors to discover on guided tours or walking trails.
