Albert Gallatin was born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1761. At the age of 19, he and a friend snuck out of school and made the trip to America, the "freest country in the universe." They arrived in Boston with nothing but $400 and some tea to sell, and it took Gallatin two years to finally find a job. Eventually he bought some land in Pennsylvania, and from there he became a success. He was a politician, financer, scholar, farmer, and entrepreneur. He served 13 years as the Secretary of the Treasury for both Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison – the longest term ever. Our hiking stick medallion displays an image of Albert Gallatin in front of his home at Friendship Hill.
