Jean Lafitte was a French-American pirate in the early 19th century. He and his brother Pierre ran a smuggling business through the ports of New Orleans, giving goods to local merchants. During the time of the War of 1812, Major General Andrew Jackson approached Jean Lafitte about using his ships and crew to help defeat the British in the Battle of New Orleans.
Lafitte agreed, but only if he and his men were pardoned, to which Jackson then agreed. His crew was especially skilled with artillery, which gave America an advantage over the British. Without Lafitte’s men, America could not have defeated the British. Wear this patch to commemorate the success of the Battle of New Orleans.
