When Florida was ceded to the United States by Spain in 1821, America needed to create protection for this new strip of coastland, and this protection came in the form of forts. Fort Pickens was one. Named after Major General Andrew Pickens, who had fought with the South Carolina militia during the American Revolution, its construction began in 1829 and was completed in 1834, but even after that it saw modifications as the years passed.

This book traces the history of Fort Pickens from its beginnings in the early 19th century to its decline in the 20th century. More than just a coffee table book, its informative pages will help ensure that you visit the fort with a clear understanding of its history, enhancing your trip and making it much more meaningful.
