De Soto National Memorial commemorates the four-year expedition of Hernando De Soto that began in May 1539 on the shores of Tampa Bay. This important moment of American history came at a cost for De Soto’s 700 fellow explorers, and especially for the Native American Tribes, who were met with warfare and disease.
