Over 18,000 casualties died in the nine month battle at Cold Harbor. The Union and Confederate armies fought near the Confederate capital at Richmond, Virginia until eventually the Confederate position collapsed. This battle was a marker for the end of the war, as Union soldiers took Richmond, and within a week the Confederates surrendered.
