The image of a young soldier-scholar sitting in his bunk, writing by candlelight while enemy shells explode overhead certainly appeals to the romantic imagination. However, it is actually an image authentic to the 1777 siege of Fort Stanwix. Even though the journal at the heart of Days of Siege: A Journal of the Siege of Fort Stanwix in 1777 is questioned for being the original, it does make clear that, during the month of August 1777, someone in the besieged Fort Stanwix kept an account of the campaign while surrounded, cut off, and bombarded almost daily. Shortly after these “days of siege,” any British hopes that the conflict would swiftly resolve with a single campaign were slashed.

This journal, first discovered in 1906, is still the most valuable single source of information on the 1777 siege of Fort Stanwix. Its discovery and details remind us that our country was once a land of twisting, rutted trails along which the armies of the Revolution marched.
