In June 1880, the Republican Party nominated James A. Garfield as its candidate for president of the United States, and his farm and home became the site of the first front-porch presidential campaign. During that summer and fall, thousands of visitors arrived to see Garfield and hear him speak. Reporters came and went, filing stories for newspapers across the country. They referred to the farm as “Lawnfield” in their articles, and the name was eventually adopted by the family.

James A. Garfield: His Life and Legacy is a biographical account of the 20th president of the United States, detailing his childhood southeast of Cleveland, Ohio; the life he shared with his wife, Lucretia Rudolph, and their children at Lawnfield; and his influential political career, including his rise to presidency and subsequent assassination only months after his inauguration. Despite serving just 200 days in office, Garfield’s legacy and devotion to fellow Americans, as well as the first presidential library, are forever preserved in Mentor, Ohio by the National Park Service at James A. Garfield National Historic Site, located in the estate of his beloved “Lawnfield”.
