Cape Lookout National Seashore protects 56 miles of remote, undeveloped barrier island beach from Ocracoke Inlet to Beaufort Inlet along North Carolina¹s Outer Banks. The seashore provides visitors with a place to fish, beachcomb, camp and retreat from the modern world.
Fishermen, shell collectors, surfers, kayakers and campers share the seashore with nesting sea turtles and shore birds. Historic districts tell the story of coastal commerce, fishing villages, shipwrecks and daring rescues.
The 163-foot-tall Cape Lookout lighthouse has welcomed sailors and visitors to the area since it was built in 1859. Painted in a diamond pattern, it is the only lighthouse in the United States to carry this unique daymark.
