At Appomattox Courthouse, Grant and Lee signed off on the end of the Civil War on April 9, 1865. Three days later Confederate soldiers marched into the village, handed over their gear and stacked their arms, making the surrender complete. The Union army issued paroles to the Confederates allowing them to return safely to their homes.
Walk with history with an Appomattox Courthouse National Historic Site pin. The image of stacked arms by the side of the road are a poignant reminder of the events of Appomattox over 150 years ago. Put it on your favorite hiking stick before your next trip to one of America's historic places.
