As witnessed by the Makalaks, ancient ancestors of the Klamath Tribe, 7,700 years ago, the towering Mount Mazama erupted then collapsed into a steaming caldera. Over centuries, this dormant volcanic basin filled with rain and snow, creating the pure blue Crater Lake. At 1,943 feet, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States.
