During the first six months of 1862, the Union army marched over seven hundred miles from Rolla, Missouri to Helena, Arkansas, and, despite crossing some of the most difficult terrain in the country, won a major battle.
At the Confederate surrender, Union Major General Henry W. Halleck and Brigadier General Samuel R. Curtis successfully secured Missouri and freed the state’s resources for use elsewhere. As a result, Confederate Major General Earl Van Dorn, Brigadier General Benjamin McCulloch, and Sterling Price, commander of the Missouri State Guard, effectively lost Missouri to the Union and failed to defend Arkansas.
