In April 1863, the 60,000 Confederate men marching under the orders of the Army of Northern Virginia were but a fraction of the size of General Joseph Hooker’s Army of the Potomac, which amounted to 130,000 able-bodied men. Despite this drastic difference in numbers, General Robert E. Lee was determined, not deterred. The two opposing armies went on to clash for an entire violent week between April 30-May 6, 1863, with May 3rd recorded as the second bloodiest day of the entire Civil War.
The Battle of Chancellorsville resulted in Lee’s greatest strategic victory but came at a tremendous cost for the Southern general and his army. Based on causalities, Lee saw a reduction of nearly 22% of his forces. In addition, his most trusted Lieutenant General—Stonewall Jackson—died on May 10 due to complications from a friendly-fire accident.
