Katmai National Park and Preserve began as Katmai National Monument, protecting the areas surrounding Mount Katmai and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. Today, the park preserves not only its active volcanic landscape but also its human history and wildlife, including abundant salmon and one of the world’s largest protected populations of brown bears.

Each year, Katmai’s brown bears gather along its rivers to feed on returning salmon, creating the remarkable wildlife spectacle celebrated during Fat Bear Week.
