In June 1776, Fort Sullivan was still under construction in South Carolina, but that didn't keep British warships from attacking it. Located at Charleston Harbor and commanded by Colonel William Moultrie, it stood strong against the British bombardment and turned the enemy warships away. Shortly afterward, it was renamed Fort Moultrie in honor of the colonel who led it during the assault.

Centered on this hiking stick medallion is the flag that was raised at the fort. Designed by Moultrie himself, it bore a crescent moon against a solid blue background. Also depicted are South Carolina soldiers with smoke and explosions in the background, offering a colorful glimpse of what it might have been like during the bombardment while commemorating the men who fought there.
